According to the Reserve Bank of India, the central bank has decided to open a special window to meet the entire daily dollar requirements of three public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs). These firms are Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.
Under this facility, the Reserve Bank will sell US dollars to the public sector OMCs through designated banks. The measure is based on an assessment of current market conditions.
The facility will come into effect from October 12, 2026, and will remain in place until further notice.
Why it matters
This special liquidity arrangement helps insulate the domestic foreign exchange market from sudden, heavy dollar demand by India's major state-run fuel retailers. By channeling foreign currency sales directly through designated banks, the central bank can better manage volatility in the rupee caused by massive oil import payments. For businesses and investors, this targeted intervention acts as a stabilizing mechanism for currency markets, easing pressure on foreign exchange reserves while ensuring uninterrupted fuel import financing.
