AI Policy

Where GrowthBrief uses AI, where it does not, and the human check on every story.

Where we use AI

  • Rewriting. AI rewrites each source item, a government press release or a feed's summary, in plain, concise language, so a long release becomes a short brief.
  • The "Why it matters" note. AI drafts this note from a brief written by our senior editor, to explain who a story affects and why.
  • Filing. AI suggests each story's section, tags, and web address, and the words used to search for its photo.

Photos

Story photos are free stock photos from Unsplash, not made by AI. Each photo's description for screen readers comes from Unsplash, where it is often written by a machine, and an editor can correct it.

Where a human decides

  • An editor decides which stories are published. AI never publishes, updates, or removes a story on its own.
  • Usually the editor reviews the AI draft against the original source, corrects facts, rewrites what reads poorly, and publishes it, or discards it.
  • An editor can also choose drafts to publish with AI: each gets a fresh AI rewrite and goes live, without a further read, if it passes the same publishing rules as a story published by hand. A story that doesn't pass stays a draft for the editor.
  • The editor can correct or unpublish any story at any time.

What AI does not do

  • It does not invent sources, quotes, or numbers. Anything not in the source is removed in review.
  • It does not choose which stories you see, and it does not personalise the site.
  • It is not trained on your data: the public site collects none (see Privacy).

Why we tell you

Every story on GrowthBrief has been drafted with AI and chosen by an editor. We say so in the footer of every page, because you should know how your news is made. If you spot an error an AI draft introduced, tell us through Corrections.

AI search and answer services

Search engines and AI answer services, such as Google, Bing, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini, may read our stories and cite them, with a link back. Our robots.txt lets them, and our guide for AI tools describes the site for them. An answer an AI service gives is its own, not ours: check the story it links to.
